Senapati, June 8: The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has strongly condemned what it described as an escalating pattern of violence, intimidation, abductions and assaults against innocent civilians across Naga-inhabited areas, expressing serious concern over recent incidents that have heightened fear and insecurity among the people.
In a press communiqué issued on June 8, ANSAM expressed outrage over the reported attack on Rongmei Naga Village Guards at Charoi Pandongba-I, allegedly carried out by Kuki armed militants. The association stated that the incident resulted in the death of 57-year-old Chunjanglung Panmei, who was initially reported missing before his death was confirmed on June 8. According to the statement, the victims had been engaged in collecting firewood when they were allegedly subjected to what ANSAM termed a calculated and unprovoked attack.
The student body also criticized the actions of the Assam Rifles during the June 7 confrontation at New Heaven and Shokvao villages in Ukhrul district. ANSAM alleged that Naga mothers and unarmed civilians participating in peaceful protests against the establishment of a military outpost were subjected to excessive force and physical assault. The association claimed that the incident left the President of Katho Katamnao Long and 22 Naga women injured. It further alleged that the use of force against peaceful demonstrators violated democratic principles, customary rights and human dignity.
According to ANSAM, the recent incidents are part of a wider pattern of violence that includes the killing of two Naga civilians at TM Kasom, the deaths of three church leaders from the Thadou community at Kotlen, the killing of a Chiru civilian at Jouzangtek, and the unresolved abduction of six Naga hostages allegedly by KNF(P). The association noted that the whereabouts and condition of the six abducted individuals remain unknown.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the response of both the Manipur Government and the Government of India, ANSAM questioned the seriousness and effectiveness of the authorities in addressing the ongoing crisis. The association stated that despite repeated incidents involving killings, abductions and assaults, there has been little visible progress in securing convictions, rescuing abducted persons, identifying perpetrators or ensuring lasting solutions. It warned that continued inaction risks deepening public distrust and undermining peace and stability in the region.
ANSAM conveyed its deepest condolences to the family of the late Chunjanglung Panmei and extended solidarity to all victims and communities affected by violence. The association called on the Government of Manipur to initiate impartial investigations into all reported incidents, establish the fate of the six abducted Naga hostages, ensure accountability for all acts of violence and abuse, and take concrete measures to restore public confidence.
The association concluded by cautioning that the patience and democratic restraint of the Naga people should not be mistaken for weakness, stressing that prolonged delays in delivering justice could further erode public faith in the rule of law and democratic institutions.
