Ukhrul, June 8: The Eastern Command of the Naga Village Guard (NVG-EC) has strongly condemned the killing of a village guard from Pongringlong village in Noney district, Manipur, alleging that Kuki militants were responsible for the attack.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the NVG-Eastern Command expressed deep concern over the death of Chunjanglung Panmei (57), a village guard from Pongringlong Part-I, located near Tupul in Noney district. According to the statement, Panmei was killed during an armed ambush allegedly carried out by Kuki militants in the early hours of June 8.

The NVG-EC stated that heavily armed militants reportedly attacked Rongmei Naga villagers at around 5:00 a.m. while they were gathering firewood between Pongringlong and Charoi Pondaijang villages. While several villagers managed to escape, Chunjanglung Panmei reportedly failed to return home. His body, riddled with bullet wounds, was later discovered in a nearby jungle close to the site of the attack.
The organization further alleged that Pongringlong village has faced repeated attacks from Kuki militant groups and their cadres operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, as well as alleged narco-terrorist elements. It cited earlier incidents on May 26 and June 5, 2026, which it claimed targeted Naga villagers in the area.
Condemning the incident as a “heinous crime,” the NVG-Eastern Command warned that such actions could provoke retaliation and further escalate tensions in the region.
The statement also expressed condolences to the bereaved family and relatives of the deceased. Describing Chunjanglung Panmei as a brave defender of his people and homeland, the organization paid tribute to his sacrifice and prayed for strength and comfort for his family during their time of grief.
“May his sacrifice bring unity and victory for our land and people,” the statement concluded.
The incident has once again highlighted growing security concerns in parts of Noney district, where tensions between communities and armed groups continue to pose challenges to peace and stability.
