Ukhrul, June 8: The Naga Women’s Union (NWU) has strongly condemned the alleged use of excessive force by personnel of the 40 Assam Rifles against Naga women who were participating in a peaceful protest at Finch Corner and Shokvao Village in Ukhrul district on June 7.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, the NWU expressed deep concern over reports that women protesters were subjected to force while opposing the establishment of a military outpost at New Haven. According to the Union, the women had gathered peacefully to voice their objections and exercise their democratic right to peaceful assembly and expression.
The organization stated that reports from the ground indicate that force was allegedly employed against unarmed women participants. While noting that the allegations require a thorough investigation, NWU said the incident raises serious concerns regarding the protection of fundamental rights, adherence to due process, and compliance with nationally and internationally recognized standards governing the use of force in civilian situations.

The Union emphasized that women participating in peaceful civic action must be treated with dignity, restraint, and respect. It argued that the use of disproportionate force against civilians, particularly women, undermines democratic values and weakens public confidence in institutions responsible for maintaining law and order.
NWU further observed that many Naga communities continue to carry memories of past incidents involving allegations of harassment, suppression, and human rights violations. It cautioned that any event perceived as repeating such experiences could deepen mistrust between communities and state institutions, while also affecting ongoing peace and reconciliation efforts.
Expressing solidarity with the affected women and communities, the Union reiterated that the concerns of indigenous communities should be addressed through dialogue, consultation, and lawful democratic processes rather than coercive measures.
NWU Demands
The Naga Women’s Union called upon the Government of India, the Government of Manipur, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the National Human Rights Commission, the Manipur Human Rights Commission, the National Commission for Women, and other relevant authorities to take immediate cognizance of the matter.
Specifically, the Union demanded:
- An independent, impartial, and time-bound inquiry into the events of June 7.
- Identification and accountability of individuals found responsible for any unlawful or excessive use of force.
- Immediate protection and safeguarding of the rights, dignity, and security of the affected women.
- Suspension of all activities related to the disputed site until consultations with concerned village authorities and stakeholders are completed.
- Concrete institutional measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents in the future.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of women’s rights, the NWU urged authorities to ensure transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law, while guaranteeing that every citizen’s constitutional rights are protected without discrimination. The Union also pledged to continue standing alongside communities seeking lawful and democratic redress of their grievances.
