Ukhrul, July 25: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has strongly rejected allegations made by the Kuki CSO Working Committee of Kamjong District regarding the demolition of the Bailey Bridge over the Namban River, describing the accusations as “provocative” and “baseless.” The response was issued through a press communiqué dated July 24.
In the statement, the TNL Working Committee denied any involvement of the Chatric Village Authority or Tangkhul NSCN-IM in the bridge demolition and accused the Kuki CSO of spreading misinformation and making unfounded allegations against Tangkhul Naga civil society organisations.
The communiqué further alleged that the Kuki CSO’s statements were intended to mislead the public and claimed that the Bailey Bridge was a vital infrastructure project long sought by border Tangkhul Naga villages to improve connectivity. It argued that there would be no rationale for local communities to destroy a bridge considered an important lifeline for the region.
The TNL also questioned references made by the Kuki CSO to abandoned villages such as Lanchah and Phaimol, asserting that they were being cited to justify what it described as external aggression against several Naga settlements. The organisation further maintained that the allegations over the bridge demolition lacked factual basis.
The communiqué contains several broader historical and political assertions regarding Naga-Kuki relations and the ongoing conflict in Manipur. These include claims about migration, land ownership, and the role of different groups in the violence that has affected the state since 2023. These statements reflect the position of the Tangkhul Naga Long and have not been independently verified.
