Ukhrul, May 29: The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has strongly condemned Friday’s deadly attack along National Highway-202, alleging that armed Kuki groups carried out indiscriminate firing on Food Corporation of India (FCI) trucks transporting essential commodities, resulting in the death of a truck driver and injuries to a police personnel.
In a strongly worded statement issued from Ukhrul, the apex Tangkhul body described the incident as part of an ongoing pattern of violence targeting civilians and vehicles plying the strategic Imphal–Ukhrul–Kamjong route.

According to the TNL Working Committee, the incident took place at around 11 a.m. between Yaolen and Mongkot Chetpu when suspected armed assailants allegedly opened fire on FCI vehicles moving along NH-202. The Committee identified the deceased as Nitis Kumar (57), a resident of Hooghly district in West Bengal, who was reportedly driving FCI Truck No. WB1SC/2403 at the time of the attack.
The Committee further informed that Disingam Mringmei (35), a Manipur Police constable posted at Litan, sustained serious injuries in the firing. He was reportedly part of the security arrangement in the area when the attack unfolded.
The TNL Working Committee alleged that despite the presence of Central Security Forces stationed along the highway, repeated incidents of violence continue to occur, raising concerns over the safety of commuters and transporters using the crucial route.
The Committee also claimed that earlier in the day, villagers from TM Kasom allegedly came under gunfire while preparing graves for a burial ceremony. It further alleged that heavy firing towards Litan created panic among residents, with several families reportedly fleeing to safer locations after bullets allegedly struck residential areas.
Expressing alarm over what it termed the worsening security situation, the Committee alleged that the Yaolen–Mongkot Chetpu stretch of NH-202 has remained vulnerable for months, with armed groups allegedly disrupting movement and creating fear among civilians.
Calling for urgent intervention, the TNL Working Committee urged both the State and Central Governments to strengthen security measures along the highway, ensure uninterrupted movement of essential supplies, and take immediate steps to restore peace and public confidence.
The Committee further warned that failure to address the recurring violence could aggravate the already fragile law and order situation and expose more innocent civilians to danger.
