The United Naga Council (UNC) has strongly condemned the killing of two Naga civilians near TM Kasom village in Ukhrul District, terming the incident as a “barbaric and premeditated attack.”
In a public statement issued from its office in Tahamzam (Senapati Headquarters), the council stated that the victims—identified as Chinaoshang Shoklungnao (45) of Tashar village and Yaruingam Vashum (42) of Kharasom village—were allegedly killed by Kuki militants while traveling along National Highway-202.
The UNC, along with All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), and district apex bodies, convened a joint emergency meeting to deliberate on the situation. The council described the attack as not merely a crime against individuals but a direct assault on the dignity, safety, and territorial integrity of the Naga people.
Leaders present at the meeting observed a minute of silence and offered prayers for the departed souls. The council also expressed concern over what it termed as the lack of seriousness by the Government of Manipur in ensuring security, particularly in Naga-inhabited areas.
In response, the UNC announced a three-day total shutdown across all Naga areas from midnight of April 20 to midnight of April 23, 2026. During this period, all institutions, businesses, and vehicular movement will remain suspended, except for emergency services.
Additionally, a candlelight vigil will be held on April 23 at 6:30 PM across district headquarters and in Imphal to honor the victims and reaffirm the commitment to peace.
The council further declared a temporary suspension of social and economic ties with Kuki communities during the mourning period, in line with customary practices.
The UNC has appealed to all citizens, organizations, and institutions to extend full cooperation in observing the resolutions.
