The shutdown comes in response to the April 7 incident at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur, where a suspected projectile struck a residential house, killing two young children and critically injuring their mother.
A total shutdown has been announced across Imphal beginning from midnight of April 18 and will continue until April 25, 2026, following public outrage over the killing of two children in a mortar shell attack earlier this month.
The shutdown has been called by various civil society organizations and local bodies in protest against the April 7 incident at Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur District, where a mortar shell reportedly hit a residential house. The explosion killed two young children on the spot and left their mother seriously injured. The tragic incident has drawn widespread condemnation across Manipur. Residents expressed shock and anger over the attack, stating that innocent civilians, especially children, have become victims of the ongoing conflict in the region.
The deaths triggered emotional responses from all sections of society, with many demanding immediate justice and stronger action to prevent such incidents in the future. Following the incident, large-scale protests erupted in Imphal and nearby areas. Demonstrators took to the streets, holding rallies, torch processions, and sit-in protests. Protesters called for accountability and urged authorities to ensure the safety of civilians.
