Ukhrul, June 5: In a strong call for environmental conservation and climate action, the Ukhrul District Working Journalists Association (UDWJA), in collaboration with the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Manipur, observed World Environment Day 2026 with an awareness programme and mass tree plantation drive at Phungyo Baptist Church (PBC), Ukhrul. The event was held under the global theme, “Now for Climate – Inspired by Nature for Climate, For Our Future,” and brought together church leaders, government officials, journalists, and community members to reflect on the urgent need to protect the environment and address climate change. Delivering the invocation, Church Elder Ameison Shaiza described World Environment Day as one of the most significant observances for humanity. He emphasized that environmental issues deserve as much attention as politics, noting that the state of the environment directly impacts the lives and future of all people. He urged the present generation to prioritize environmental stewardship for the benefit of society.

Associate Pastor of PBC, Seth Ragui, highlighted the importance of environmental conservation from a Biblical perspective. He stated that God has blessed humanity with abundant natural resources to sustain life, and therefore people have a responsibility to protect and preserve creation for future generations. Chief Medical Officer of Ukhrul, Dr. Kapangring AS, commended Phungyo Baptist Church—widely regarded as the Mother Church of Manipur—for spearheading the initiative. Stressing the importance of clean water, fresh air, hygienic surroundings, and healthy organic food, he called on citizens to work collectively towards creating a healthier environment and a better future. Polly Makang, ADC and ADM, Ukhrul, remarked that despite her busy official schedule, she chose to attend the programme because environmental protection is a pressing concern that affects every section of society. She appreciated the organizers for raising awareness on an issue of critical importance. Addressing the gathering, Dingringngam Kamei, SDO, Ukhrul, reminded participants that humans are merely stewards of nature. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi’s famous words, “Nature has enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed,” he called for the complete eradication of poppy cultivation and advocated extensive tree plantation as a means to combat environmental degradation and the growing drug menace. He also encouraged the planting of beneficial tree species and urged people to preserve the natural beauty of Ukhrul, recalling the district’s pristine environment during his first posting there as an SDC. A special environmental pledge was administered by Hopkinson Chiphang, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, reaffirming the commitment of participants to protect forests, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable environmental practices. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Eno Lester Makang, President of UDWJA, who expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, participants, and supporters for contributing to the success of the observance. Following the formal programme, participants carried out a mass tree plantation drive at the PBC Cemetery in Tangrei and the Mission Ground at Alungtang, Ukhrul, symbolizing a collective commitment to building a greener, healthier, and climate-resilient future. The observance served as a powerful reminder that safeguarding nature is not only an environmental responsibility but also a moral obligation owed to future generations, with participants united in the message: “Plant Trees, Not Destruction.”
