Ukhrul, June 7: The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on the President of Katamnao Long (KKL), intimidation of unarmed women, and the establishment of an Assam Rifles outpost at Shokvao Village, describing the incidents as a serious violation of democratic rights and village authority.
In a press statement issued on Sunday, TKS alleged that Assam Rifles personnel assaulted the KKL President and used live rounds to intimidate women who were participating in a peaceful protest against the establishment of an Assam Rifles camp on village land. The organisation claimed that the outpost was set up without the consent of the village authorities, violating customary governance systems and the provisions of the Manipur (Village Authorities in Hill Areas) Act, 1956.
TKS further alleged that the use of force against unarmed women exercising their democratic rights was unacceptable and questioned what it described as the selective conduct of security forces. The student body also expressed concern over recurring confrontations involving civilians in areas such as Shangshak Khullen, Finch Corner, Shokvao, and New Heaven, which reportedly resulted in injuries to women, civilians, and media personnel.
The organisation stated that such incidents raise serious concerns regarding operational accountability and the alleged use of excessive force against civilians engaged in peaceful democratic expression. It also referred to past allegations of unlawful operations and fake encounters involving Assam Rifles, urging the force to reassess its role and responsibilities in maintaining peace and order.
Condemning the alleged assault and intimidation, TKS said any attempt to silence student leaders or suppress public voices through coercion, intimidation, or force constitutes an attack on democratic principles and constitutional freedoms. The student body asserted that the Naga people would continue to defend their land, identity, and rights through peaceful and lawful means.
TKS has called for an immediate, impartial, and time-bound investigation into the incident and demanded exemplary action against any personnel found responsible. It warned that failure to deliver justice could further deepen public resentment and lead to renewed public agitation.
The organisation also expressed solidarity with the women protesters and the leadership of KKL, stating that the struggle for justice, dignity, and democratic rights would continue without fear. Additionally, TKS urged youths, students, and the public to support calls made by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) regarding the boycott and dissociation from Indian armed forces in response to what it termed longstanding grievances of the Naga people.
The statement was issued by the Information and Publicity Cell of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS).
